Park Avenue is transforming to an equal opportunity roadway for cars and bicyclists. Driving on the newly remodeled Park Avenue and navigating through the pavement markings can have a striking effect. Waterloo is entering a new era. As days go by the unfamiliar marks on the pavement start to become a familiar scene. It all makes sense now, where the bicycles drive, where the cars park, and how fast one should be driving. The visitors will definitely notice the change. At first they might struggle a little bit to figure out where to park their cars. In the end it is all good. Hopefully they will take our message of progress to their home towns. The bike lanes are installed with some safety features. It is always up to the cyclist and the driver to be very careful when they drive or ride along this street. Bicycling is inherently dangerous as the slightest crash can cause injuries.

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) reports nearly one-third of traffic related deaths in the United States is due to alcohol-impaired driving. Holiday season is here and the threat of increased alcohol-related traffic deaths and injuries is looming again. There are ways that we can reduce this suffering or stop it from happening. I am sure everybody knows how to do it but will we act on it?
Here is a link to an article about death of a driver in a crash. The other vehicle was on autopilot. While still under investigation, preliminary data show the computer was at fault.
The Iowa Department of Transportation in partnership with the Iowa Department of Public Health and the Iowa Department of Public Safety has launched a Zero Fatality campaign. Click on their logo for interesting videos:

Early childhood encounters with traffic safety issues could produce long-term benefits and affect their adulthood driving behavior. Previously DSCV had produced and distributed an elementary school level activity booklet. An online children traffic safety quiz contest was another undertaking. The latest effort is the Elementary School Outreach project. DSCV is in partnership with Waterloo and Evansdale Police Departments and has full support of the Waterloo School District. Officers will visit the classrooms and discuss traffic safety skills. The goal is to make children aware of traffic safety. The effort is not so much as to strictly “train” the children but make them cognizant of safety issues.
